Berklee on the Road

Return to NOLA

I’ve been riding this marvelous de ja vu since arriving here in New Orleans two days ago with our 2015 sponsorship group. Five years ago I stepped off a plane with six Berklee colleagues and strangers as a participant in the 2010 group. This year I feel fortunate to come back with seven new colleagues to lead the group and share all the wonders of this beautiful city.

Sue Buzzard Serenades Us & the Mighty Mississippi

Ain’t Misbehavin on the Mississippi banks performed by Sue Buzzard

Ashley Macchia (faculty development), Jessica Halton (Institutional Advancement), Andrew Crawford (IT), Sue Buzzard (Berklee Online), Ruthie Ristich (Ear Training, faculty), Jordan Lockaby (Admissions),  Julia Polanco (IT) and I landed in NOLA on Monday afternoon, and settled into the Best Western French Quarter hotel. First few items on our agenda? Immerse and explore! I’m happy to say we have accomplished both with incredible Nawlins’ style dinners at Oceana in the French Quarter (Monday) and Jacques-Imo’s (Tuesday). We strolled through beautiful Jackson Square, gorged ourselves on coffee and beignet’s at Cafe du Monde and strolled along the Mississippi. Sue took out her violin and entertained us with her rendition “Ain’t Misbehavin’ while we tried to catch a breeze from the water. The humidity in NOLA is no joke and we found ourselves taking a quick “shower” in the fountains outside the Aquarium of the Americas.

Students Share their Experience from the Berklee in Santo Domingo 2014 Program

Berklee on the Road (BOR) is one of the many programs produced by the Global Initiatives department at Berklee. This program provides students the chance to experience Berklee-like classes. The classes typically take place over a three- to five-day period. During these programs, students participate in lectures, labs, master classes, ensembles, workshops, and jam sessions during the day and have the opportunity to attend special events, panel discussions, and live performances in the evening.

Circle Song Choir: The Road from Massa, Italy to Boston and Back

I was born and raised in Massa, a town in the beautiful region of Tuscany, Italy. Enclosed between the Apuan Alps Mountains (famous all over the world for their prestigious white marble) and the Mediterranean Sea, Massa is a quiet, provincial town with 60 thousand inhabitants. In spite of our small population, it’s incredible the amount of talented people who play there. There are more than ten music schools, countless bands, singers, musicians and teachers. We even have the great Massa and Carrara Orchestra, who recently played with many popular Italian acts and big international names like Sting, Kylie Minogue, Andrea Bocelli, Mario Biondi, and Giovanni Allevi. Growing up in such a stimulating musical environment and collaborating with so many young artists was absolutely crucial for my artistic growth.

My road from Massa to Boston passes through another beautiful Italian city, Perugia, where I won a scholarship for Berklee during the Umbria Jazz Festival. There, I met Joey Blake for the first time. Donna McElroy invited him to one of her lessons where he introduced us to the circle songs and after that day, my conception of singing and using the voice forever changed. I was completely amazed, I felt an overwhelming sense of emotion and joy, almost spiritual like. It was as if I was coming in touch with my soul for the very first time.

Laying the Groundwork in LA for 2013 Summer

Post by Jason Camelio, director of international programs.

If you look hard enough, you might see an ever-so-slight difference in the traffic patterns on the LA freeways during the week of SXSW. For alum and program consultant Tom Griesgraber and I, it really did not make a difference as we crisscrossed the city for meetings and scouting locations in preparation for the new Berklee in Los Angeles summer programs to be held this August. You heard correctly “p-r-o-g-r-a-m-S”.  Two to be specific. In what has become standard practice, we have reached out to some key Berklee alumni to help us prepare for two programs with that will have a detailed focus on the craft of songwriting, performance and production.
