Devin Wojtanek: Thoughts on SXSW

Berklee Blogs introduces Devin Wojtanek, a Music Business major and spring intern, as he begins his internship with Indie Ambassador, the team behind, a portfolio web app designed to enhance communication within the professional music & entertainment industries. In today’s blog, Devin tells us about an exciting new project and his thoughts on SXSW”.

Indie Ambassador was super involved in this year’s SXSW. I unfortunately have never been able to make my way down to the lone star state to partake in the giant music fest. By virtue though, I really felt like I was involved in something bigger than myself these past couple weeks. It makes me yearn to be there in person one day, possibly playing the Berklee Showcase, working with some company, or of course, just being there for the music.

Berklee SXSW Day Party in Pictures

Staff blogger Magen Tracy, assistant director for online marketing and social media, blogs about Berklee’s 8th Annual SXSW Day Party in Austin, TX. Read more about student performances on the road at Berklee on Tour.’s Ben Maitland-Lewis and Chloe Sunshine’s Kendall Egan.

Last Friday, March 15, Berklee hosted our eighth annual SXSW Day Party, and our first at an outdoor SXSW venue, Brush Square Park. It was a great day for the Berklee community, and for music in general, with student and alumni bands from all around the country, and 1,000 attendees including alumni, press, fans, and new faces. The party was the culmination of the efforts of Heavy Rotation Records (our student-run label), Berkleemusic (our online school), The Red Room at Cafe 939, and Berklee Alumni Affairs, and was broadcast live on TuneIn Radio by and Backbone Radio Networks to more than 6,500 listeners worldwide.

Berklee Bands @ SXSW 2013: Add Yours!

Post by Magen Tracy, Asst. Director for Online Marketing, currently in Austin for Berklee and loving her job.

Austin band Ume plays Berkee's 2012 SXSW Day Party

It’s SXSW time again, and in addition to Berklee’s annual Official SXSW Day Party (this year at Brush Square Park), there are dozens (hundreds?) of alumni in town playing, presenting, and promoting events through out the week as part of SXSW, RedGorilla, Texas Rock Fest, and more. Here are some of the ones we know about. We’ll be covering as many of them as we can throughout the week, here and on Twitter and Instagram (#berkleesxsw).  If you know of more, add them in the comments!

SXSW is crawling with Berklee bands

SXSW is always always a hotbed of activity for alumni and student bands from Berklee and this year is no exception.  Scouring the Official SXSW showcases and parties, and Unofficial shows happening all over Austin, I spotted at least 60 bands/artists that include alumni or students. That means the real number is probably way higher. Of course, among these were the bands that played Berklee’s Seventh Annual Official SXSW Party on the Friday of SXSW Music. Check out videos from the show!

While putting on Berklee’s party is fun, it means we had to miss many alumni bands that were playing at the same exact time, including Dirty Dishes, Lost in the Trees, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Zambri, Sydney Wayser, Zorch, Sarah Blacker, Gentlemen Hall, Kishi Bashi, and more. Fortunately, before and after Berklee’s party, I did get a chance to check out some other alumni bands around the  festival.
