How We Hacked Our Berklee Experience: Tips from Alumni

“Life’s what you make it, so let’s make it rock!” Hannah Montana back in the day said it best, and as we head into the second half of our school year, the student team at Berklee’s Institute for Creative Entrepreneurship (BerkleeICE) has been wondering, how do students rock their Berklee experience? It’s safe to say we’ve all come to Berklee with the intention of learning. However, learning has many different forms. The Majors Grids we follow for academic completion are very helpful, but what other practices have we used to personalize and curate a collegiate career that is right for us?

yoshieYoshie Nakayama, from Tokyo, is a 5th semester Contemporary Writing and Production major, trombone principal student. She studies arranging, recording/mixing with ProTools, and vocal ensemble. She graduated Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo with bachelor of music from Music education major. She has license of teaching music in japanese Junior high/high school.

こんにちは。日本は桜がだいぶ咲いているようですね。ボストンにもソメイヨシノではないのですが、似たようなピンク色の花を咲かせる樹がたくさん並んでいる道がありますが、まだ雪が降ったりしているので、花が咲くのはまだ先になりそうです。

さて、先週の月曜から木曜まで、バークリーで第29回インターナショナルフォークミュージックフェスティバルという毎年恒例のイベントが開催されました。

This year’s Berklee Monterey Quintet is playing three times on the Monterey Jazz Festival. The first gig is performing for 600 wiggly, middle school music students, at lunchtime, on the day before the festival begins. The show takes place on the Garden Stage, where the group performs again, complete with fifth member Billy Buss, on Friday night.
