City Music National and PULSE have joined forces with Kompoz.com to make online music collaboration a reality for our network students all around the country! Our Audio Production and Music Notation Developer, Jason Stokes, plays a huge part in this collaboration.
Kompoz is an online workspace for musicians and songwriters. It is used to compose new music with other artists around the world.
Anyone who has an idea for a song can record a track, upload it, and then invite others to add drums, bass, vocals or anything else!
We’re excited because our kids have expressed an interest in sharing their creative processes with other network sites. Now they have the ability to create and share musical ideas under one of three Creative Commons Licenses that are completely transferable. And Kompoz serves as a vehicle to publish the work once it is complete. Starting a new project is cool because you can select from searchable criteria such as key, tempo, genre, mood, and instrumental needs. There is a social networking element that allows students to invite other users to collaborate on their current projects, as well as contribute to projects that have been started by other users within their group. Kompoz also provides a profile page where you have the option to outline your skill sets, add photos, upload videos, and save favorites. The website hosts all the audio in MP3, WAV, WMA, or AIFF formats, and encodes them automatically for smooth-streaming playback.
Kompoz currently has roughly 100,000 users worldwide, and we hope our students will add to this growing community of creativity. As we all know, collaboration is a key component to musical development. We feel that providing our students with the ability to write music with other students from different cultural backgrounds is essential to healthy musical development.
PULSE and the Berklee City Music Network would like to extend our appreciation to Kompoz.com for helping us to achieve a new level of student collaboration! We’re thrilled to bring a large network of kids a little bit closer together, one project at a time.
Stay tuned for more news about our collaboration with Kompoz! We will be posting some of the projects from our students!
