LAB: Getting Into Music and Making it Work

Berklee Alumni Spotlight: Nick Buda ’96
Written by: Shantell Ogden ‘05

Nick Buda (’96) started playing drums on his mom’s couch cushion when he was a kid in Cape Town, South Africa. As early as ten years old, he was begging her to take lessons.

“I got my first set of practice pads when I was 13 and my family moved to Nashville to escape apartheid in South Africa,” said Nick. “I used to play along with bands like Living Color and James Taylor with my electric drums for hours everyday. I was 14 when I got my first drum kit.”

PULSE Recordings in L.A.

lLast week, Dan went to L.A. to record some new PULSE tunes for our song library.
Here’s what he had to say:

Great session yesterday: we recorded horns on “I Want To Take You Higher” (originally recorded by Sly and the Family Stone in 1969).
In the house were Ray Montero (Berklee alum on trumpet), Miguel Gandleman (Berklee alum on tenor), Garret Smith (USC grad on trombone) These guys have worked as a section with a whole bunch of big names in the business—but in a couple of weeks they start a little gig in Burbank known as “The Tonight Show.” Producer Bryan Abreu (Berklee ’04) and yours truly added hand claps later.

Check out this video interview that Bryan did with “The Horns”:

Today we’re mixing “Love Story” (yup—the Taylor Swift tune) which features Rashidra Scott (Berklee ’04) on lead vocal. Tomorrow we’ll tackle “Just Dance” (Gaga—feat. Rashidra again) and then MGMT’s “Time to Pretend” on Thursday.

Look for early summer posting to the PULSE website!
