An Inside Look at the Tech Companies in Silicon Valley

By Alyse Brown

After attending the Silicon Valley Trip, my perspective on the tech industry has changed.  The opportunity to meet with top companies has opened my eyes to many positions where a Berklee student could work at after graduation. I had been planning to attend graduate school next year, but after meeting with Berklee alumni, I am now contemplating taking a different path. The alumni dinner was really impactful for me, as it showed me a new range of benefits that can be achieved with a music degree from Berklee. This could include being able to be incorporate music into apps, or creating music for video games. At most of these companies we were not only seen as musicians, but as innovators. It was inspiring to see the vast number of Berklee graduates who are successfully making their mark on Silicon Valley.

The Connection Between Music and Technology – A Silicon Valley Trip Reflection

By Jasper van Dijk

This trip is one of the reasons why I came to Berklee. It’s not everyday that you get an inside look into some of the most hard-working, innovative companies. It seemed that each place we visited continued to be more and more exciting, with the first day truly setting the tone. One of the most captivating takeaways for me about Stanford’s d.school is the collaborative atmosphere fostered on campus, allowing professionals from various backgrounds to create, design and innovate. The spaces are designed to design; whether you’re studying acoustical engineering or user experience design (UX). I truly believe that this concept of professional collaboration across various departments applies to every place we visited.

Right Brain vs. Left Brain: Music and Silicon Valley

As soon as our group began the uphill ascent to the Skywalker ranch on I realized how blessed we all were to be on this trip. We were given an opportunity to visit some of the most well known yet exclusive tech companies in the United States, perhaps even the world. One evening before the end of our trip we went to an evening reception, and while there I began talking with a member of our group about our experiences. In the middle of the discussion they mentioned that the price we paid was totally surpassed by the companies and people we were able to visit.

Redefining Expectations in Silicon Valley

As I stepped off the plane and made my way through San Francisco International Airport for the first time, I had no idea what to expect, and I certainly had no idea I was going to leave that airport one week later with a different view and value of who I am as a musician. As one of the 20 fortunate students to explore Silicon Valley with Berklee’s Institute for Creative Entrepreneurship (BerkleeICE) this winter break, I was in for quite the adventure.
