Berklee Profs at Pedal Steel Guitar Convention

Matt Glaser, Artistic Director of Berklee’s American Roots Program, reports from the 40th International Pedal Steel Guitar Convention in St. Louis earlier this month, which he attended with fellow faculty members Mike Ihde and Norm Zocher.

Ever since the 1970s, when I was a young professional musician in New York City, I have heard about and longed to attend the annual pedal steel guitar convention that takes place in St. Louis, MO. Well, this year, I finally got my chance. Along with Berklee’s steel guitar masters, Mike Ihde and Norm Zocher, I made my way to Scotty’s 40th Annual International Pedal Steel Guitar Convention in St Louis.

We’ve had a full week in São Paulo in conjunction with our partner school Souza Lima. The agenda included clinics from our extraordinary faculty team (Jim Odgren, Bruno Raberg and Matt Glaser), auditions and interviews for admission applicants, visits to local schools and government organizations, interviews for radio and television and a lot of opportunity for all of us to learn more about Brazil and its music.

As I reflect on the week, the word that continuously comes to mind is joy. Every experience, from our interactions with students, teachers, local musicians, and the Brazilian people themselves, is engulfed by a kind of joyous exuberance for life, and especially for music.
