5 Cubed Part 5 – Meet Cheong!

This is the final installment of 5 Cubed! I hope you enjoyed getting to know a little bit about the 5 incoming students I highlighted, and I highly encourage you to try to get to know more about Nelli, Jairus, Meghan, Lomar, and Cheong if you see them around campus since they’re all super talented, interesting, and awesome!

Speaking of Cheong, I know this talented incoming Berklee student because we both live on the same floor at Bayridge Residence. Enjoy the interview below…..

Identification Questions:
What’s your name?
Cheong Kim

Where are you from?
Old Bridge, NJ

What’s your instrument?
Piano

Serious/Silly Questions:
When did you know you wanted to pursue music as your profession?
I mean, when I was younger, when I first studied piano, I just loved it. I had no reason, I just loved it right away, and that’s why I choose it.

My aunt told me that one time when I was little, like, 3 or 2, I climbed the piano, and I said that I wanted to play. I guess it’s like a natural thing that I wanted to learn how to play the piano.

What’s your guilty pleasure? Something you don’t want your friends or faculty to know you enjoy?
I don’t want to say it in public. But I love, like, mellow and sexy music. *laughing ensues*

Any artist in particular?
Well, no *more laughter*

Okay, if you don’t want to admit to me any artist or song, what have you been listening to this week?
Oscar Peterson, John Legend, Corinne Bailey Rae, John Coltrane – I jump around a lot!

Thank you so much for following this series! I really enjoyed getting to photograph so many talented musicians and hopefully I’ll do another series similar to this soon. Until then….

P.S. A little “Behind-the-Scenes” note: This photoshoot ended up being fraught with technical difficulties because my focusing screen dislodged itself from my camera earlier that day on the Aquarium trip. Cheong was so sweet & patient while I had some major focusing trouble and I want to give her a special thanks for being so awesome! You’re the best, Cheong!

5 Cubed Part 4 – Meet Lomar!

Hello Everyone! I hope you’ve all had a fantastic weekend. I got to shoot another incoming student from my peer advising group on Friday – and look! I actually photographed someone with his instrument!

Miss the other parts of the series? Read Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.

Identification Questions:
What’s your name?
Lomar Brown

Where are you from?
Rocky Hill, Connecticut

What’s your instrument?
Saxophone

Serious/Silly Questions:
When did you know you wanted to pursue music as your profession?
Well, I knew when I was going into High School, just being exposed to so much music – so much jazz. I realized more that I couldn’t see myself not doing this everyday. Freshman year I started going to an arts High School. So, you know, you get connections, and you see all these great things and people who are on the scene – and you want to be like that.

What’s your guilty pleasure song, artist, or album?
I don’t have a guilty pleasure. Why feel ashamed? I mean, everybody looks down on everybody. I could say, like, Beyoncé and there are people who hate Beyoncé.

Okay, well, what have you been listening to this week?
Earfood by Roy Hargrove Quintet

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

By the way, when I was packing up my equipment from the shoot, Lomar and I started talking about Gerald Clayton, the pianist from the Roy Hargrove Quintet. I’ve seen Gerald perform twice in D.C. so you can imagine my jealousy when Lomar told me he had attended a masterclass by Gerald Clayton during a jazz summer program.

Anyways, Lomar is extremely talented, and I’m so thankful that he let me highlight him for the Berklee-Blogs. Thanks, Lomar!

Happy Friday, everyone! I hope you all had an exciting day finding out your course schedules & enjoying some much needed rain (finally)!  Anyways, I first met Meghan earlier this week when we were both waiting to complete our placement auditions. And as you’ll see, she’s super awesome – read on!

Also, if you missed Parts 1 & 2 of 5 Cubed, here are the links: Part 1 and Part 2.

Identification:
Your name?
Meghan Knowles

Where are you from?
Telluride, Colorado

What’s your instrument?
Piano

Serious/Silly Questions:
When did you know you wanted music to be your profession?
You know, I was kind of always one of those little girls who would sing into the hairbrush microphone and dream of being Christina Aguilera when I grow up. So I always just kind of assumed I would pursue music since I’ve always been inclined toward to it. It came naturally to me really.

And then my sophomore year of highschool was when I really decided that music is what I’m going to do. And that was kind of around the time that I really discovered Berklee. Once I discovered Berklee had a songwriting major, I was sold. I was like, that’s my goal in life. I have it now.

What’s your guilty pleasure artist, album, or song?
I guess Taylor Swift. I love Taylor Swift. I mean, as a songwriter, she’s amazing. I mean this girl is, like, what 19? And how many number 1 hits has she had so far?! She’s outstanding to me. I love her – I really do. I guess that would be my guilty pleasure.

Thank you so much, Meghan, for letting me interview & photograph you for the 5 Cubed series!
