Danielle Angeloni is a singer/songwriter inspired by culture, traveling, and life. She loves collaborative writing, learning, and performing and is honored to be finishing her Degree in Professional Music and Minor in Music Technology and Innovation at Berklee’s Valencia, Spain Campus.
Six months ago I decided to take the Spring 2013 semester abroad in Berklee Valencia, and had no idea what I was in for! I sold my car so I’d have some extra money for traveling, and decided that Europe would be my next adventure. Now having taken the life-changing semester abroad, I am returning to Berklee Valencia because I know it is currently the best decision for furthering my career as a musician.
Berklee’s Music Technology and Innovation Minor (MTI), Spain’s Jazz Clubs and Music Cafes, International Networking, and Flamenco/Mediterranean Music are a few of the many reasons I will soon be a resident of “Barrio Ruzafa” in Valencia, Spain.
ALL students studying at the Berklee Valencia Campus have studio time allotted to them per week, regardless of their major. This is a HUGE deal for me- a Professional Music major wanting to record my original music. Because of this advantage I was able to record and produce vocals for my song “Love” with the help of my singer/songwriter friend who had recently started the MTI minor.
Many of my musician friends who were close to clueless about technology and running a studio session before studying in the MTI minor program, can now confidently enter a studio and record independently.
I will be finishing the MTI minor in the fall, and that is my goal!
Berklee’s Boston campus has it’s roots in Jazz music, but to my surprise I found my niche in the friendly and fun Valencia Jazz scene. TONS of tiny music cafes and jazz clubs are like Jimmy Glass, Café Mercedes, and No hay nada mejor que 27 amigos Jazz Café are found in the most beautiful corners and crevices of the Carmen, Ruzafa, and Benimaclet neighborhoods. There are open mics and jam sessions for almost every night of the week and PLENTY of performance opportunities for all genres all throughout Valencia.
My favorite part of the Spring 2014 semester at Berklee Valencia was getting to know the master’s students who traveled from all over the world. I now have friends working in the music industry in the UK, India, Amsterdam, Canada, and more. Also, the Global Entertainment and Music Business masters students started Berklee Valencia’s first record label called Disrupcion Records which featured a few of my fellow undergrads as artist. In addition, I was able to study how music works differently and similarly all over the world by taking Grahm Ball’s International Music Business Symposium class once a week.
I must not forget the magical excursions taken to Granada and Madrid. The days were filled with hilarious and brilliant tour guides taking us through places like the Ancient Alhambra Palace, and Reina Sofia Museum. The evenings were filled with Flamenco Shows, Gyspy caves, and historical moonlit views. Also while on our trip to Madrid, my ensemble performed in on of the city’s most esteemed jazz clubs.
As I clean out my Boston apartment, I could not be more excited to explore, meet new people, see old friends I made in Spain, and grow into a more cultured and skilled musician.
