Berklee Blogs follows up with Florenza Campos, Brazilian-born singer-songwriter, Professional Music major and recent intern at Universal Music Latin. In part I of a two-part post, Florenza sets the stage for the massive scope of Universal Music Publishing and her central role in it

Universal Music Group is the largest international recording company in the world. There are branches of it across America, and in countries such as the United Kingdom and France. It is home to hundreds of signed artists, many of which are huge superstars. Universal Music Latin Entertainment, the specific branch of Universal where my internship takes place, is based out of Miami, and focuses on the Latin music market.

The company covers recorded music, music publishing, and marketing. They build and develop artists and songwriters, then distribute their music worldwide. Universal Music Publishing Group is the industry’s top music publishing operation. Other than developing songwriters, they administer copyrights to compositions for use in recordings, public performances, films, and advertisements. Bravado is UMG’s merchandising company, and sells artists and products through fashion retail, the internet, and live performances. UMG represents music in many genres, and range from artists such as Louis Armstrong to Lady Gaga.

My site supervisor is Aldo Gonzalez, the A&R manager at Universal Music Latino. I also work for Pedro Guzman, the VP of the A&R department, and Daniel Zuluaga, who is the operations manager. They are all amazing people, who include me in everything they can. Working with Aldo has helped me open my eyes into the business. My favorite part about it is when I get to attend the award shows, concerts, events, recording and video sessions with the artists. I’ve arranged meetings with our artists, participated in backstage work for concerts and events, and overall, helping our artists with anything they need. Last week I worked the door for the Latin Billboards after party, and did so until four in the morning. I’ve been in charge or arranging the guest list for such events. I am also in charge of listening to demos and song submissions. Everything has to go through me first before it reaches my bosses, which makes me feel like a very important member of this company.

BIO

Brazilian born singer-songwriter Florenza started her musical passion at the age of 4, when she first heard her mom singing karaoke. Not knowing English yet, she would listen to and mimic the sounds of idols Celine Dion and Whitney Houston. After moving to Miami at the age of 8, she immediately began vocal lessons with Grammy Award-Winning voice coach and producer Jose Miguel Velasquez, who produced her first two demos. At 15, she was invited by legendary producer Rudy Perez, to sing background for over 25 Disney songs in Portuguese for Disney’s 100 Years of Magic in São Paulo, Brazil. In 2008, she recorded in Mix Studios in Miami, Florida, a song called “Love Me Forever”, produced and written by the Fliptones (Britney Spears, Lil Wayne), and Jason Derulo.

Her first album “Can’t Describe” is available on iTunes, along with the single “Heartbreaker” featuring remixes by The Krafters and Manny Lehman. All music was written by her and producer Sergio Marte, a fellow Berklee graduate. The “Heartbreaker” remixes have been charting top 10 for the past few months on the Latin Club Charts around the world. With that same single, she has won a spot in this year’s Songwriter’s Night at Berklee College of Music, and will be performing it at the Berklee Performance Center on April 9.

Florenza is at her final semester at Berklee, interning at and loving her job at Universal Music’s Latin Division in Miami, Florida until she graduates in May of this year.
